The major economic activities of the State, considering the year 2006, continue to the areas mining and metallurgical production and agribusiness, especially the production of pig iron, calcined alumina, aluminum unalloyed aluminum alloy and soybeans, contributing to export growth Maranhão and reflecting directly in economic activities of the sectors of Agriculture, Industry and Services.

The agricultural accounting in 2006, 16.6% of the value of the gross, is to weight the distribution of economic activities in the sector, temporary crops 36.9%, Sylviculture Forestry / Logging 29.9%, 24.4% Cattle-rising, Fishing 5.8% and 3.0% permanent crops.
